Summary of this experience

Our exciting 5-day adventure begins in Cusco, where we will enter the cloud forest of the high jungle. Here, we will have the opportunity to observe various species that inhabit this area, such as cock-of-the-rocks, spectacled bears, quetzals, trogons, among others. From Puerto Atalaya, we will embark on boats and navigate the Madre de Dios River. Our first stop will be at Cocha Machuwasi, where we will be able to observe a wide variety of animals in their natural environment. Then, we will continue our tour to appreciate the parrot clay licks. We will have the opportunity to admire the mammal clay licks. Our next stop will be in the community of Shintuya, where we will be able to enjoy the hot waters and waterfalls of the area. This will be a perfect time to relax and connect with nature in a stunning environment.

Itinerary

Our trip begins with a very early pick-up at your hotel, between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM, in our comfortable private bus. During the trip, we will stop to visit the Funerary Towers or Chullpas of Ninamarca, located at 3,750 meters above sea level, and enjoy a brief visit to the picturesque folkloric town of Paucartambo, where we will also be able to appreciate a colonial bridge. Then, we will ascend to the upper area of ​​Paucartambo, specifically to the Acjanaco sector, located at 4,000 meters above sea level. From here, we will begin our descent through the mysterious cloud forest, home to a great diversity of wild flora and fauna, including beautiful orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns. During a hike, we will have the exciting opportunity to witness the mating ritual of the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupícola peruviana). There is also the possibility of spotting trogons (Trogon sp.), quetzals and, with luck, even the elusive spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus). In the afternoon, we will arrive at the village of Pilcopata, located 550 meters above sea level, where we will stay in a cozy typical lodge with private bathrooms and showers, away from the town, for the night.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will continue our journey by bus to Atalaya, a 45-minute ride that will take us to an altitude of 490 meters above sea level. In Atalaya, we will board a boat for 30 minutes until we reach the Paititi Lodge, where we will spend the night in a typical environment with private bathrooms and showers. During the boat ride, we will have the opportunity to observe a variety of animals in their natural habitat. After a satisfying lunch, in the afternoon we will head by boat to Cocha Machuwasi. We will take a ride on a typical catamaran of the area to observe a great diversity of birds, such as the shansho (Ophisthocomus hoatzin), as well as monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans and insects. We may also be lucky enough to spot some capybaras (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris). In the evening, we offer an exciting optional Night Trekking program for those who wish to explore the jungle in the dark. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge where we will have private bathrooms and showers to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Very early we will set off by boat to the green parrot clay lick, a mineral-rich clay wall where we will be able to observe between 3 and 4 different species of parrots in their natural habitat. After this fascinating experience, we will return by boat to enjoy a walk through the forest, we will have the opportunity to spot a variety of birds, as well as monkeys, small reptiles, dwarf caimans and insects. the afternoon, we will return to our lodge to enjoy a comforting lunch. Then, during the night, we will have the opportunity to participate in a night walk to explore the jungle in a completely different environment. We will rest at the lodge, where we will have private bathrooms and showers for greater comfort during our stay.
After breakfast, we board the boat for an exciting trip down the Madre de Dios River to the native community of Shintuya, which will take us approximately 3 hours. During the trip, we will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of birds and animals along the riverbank. Once in Shintuya, we will be able to visit the native population and learn about their lifestyle and culture. Afterwards, we will continue our boat trip to the Aguas Calientes sector, a special place in the jungle where we can enjoy healing waters and take a relaxing shower. We will also have the opportunity to visit the waterfalls in the area and marvel at their natural beauty. the afternoon, we will return to the Paititi lodge to rest and enjoy dinner. In addition, we will have the option to participate in a night walk to explore the jungle in the dark and observe the jungle’s nightlife.
After enjoying our delicious breakfast, we say goodbye to the Paititi lodge and begin our return by boat to Atalaya. There, the bus awaits us to take us back to Cusco, passing once again through the enigmatic cloud forest on our way to the imperial city. We estimate arriving in Cusco around 6:30 to 7:00 p.m., thus ending our exciting journey through the Manu jungle and returning home with unforgettable memories of this adventure in the Amazon.

The night hike offers a different perspective of the jungle, with the chance to witness the jungle’s nightlife at its peak. Day four takes us to the native community of Shintuya, where travelers can immerse themselves in the local culture and learn about their way of life. A visit to the medicinal waters of Aguas Calientes and the nearby waterfalls offers a relaxing and rejuvenating experience before returning to the lodge to enjoy dinner and rest. Finally, day five marks the return to Cusco from the Paititi lodge, with the opportunity to enjoy the views of the cloud forest on the way back home. Estimated to arrive in Cusco around 6:30-7:00 p.m. marks the end of an unforgettable adventure in the Manu jungle.
