Summary of this experience

We begin this exciting adventure very early in Cusco, crossing the mysterious cloud forest, where we will have the opportunity to spot the spectacled bear, the cock-of-the-rock and other fascinating species. Then, we head to the Manu National Park, sailing on motorized boats along the river, during which we will observe endemic species of the region. During the trip, we will make stops in jungle communities to learn about their customs and culture. We will also stop at medicinal hot springs to enjoy a well-deserved rest. Once in the Reserved Zone, we will explore Cocha Otorongo and Salvador, where we will have the opportunity to spot various species of birds, mammals, giant otters and reptiles. Then, we will visit Cocha Salvador, where we will be able to observe giant otters and a wide variety of wildlife. addition, we will have the unique opportunity to witness the impressive spectacle of the colorful macaw clay licks from an observation platform. It will be an unforgettable experience surrounded by the majestic nature of the Manu National Park.

Itinerary

We leave Cusco early in the morning, between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., with pickup from our hotel in a comfortable bus. Along the way, we stop to visit the Funerary Towers or Chullpas of Ninamarca, located 3,750 meters above sea level, and make a brief stop in Paucartambo, a charming folkloric town with a colonial bridge. Then, we ascend towards the upper area of ​​Paucartambo until we reach Acjanaco, the highest point of our route, located at 4,000 meters above sea level. Next, we begin our descent through the mysterious cloud forest, characterized by its great variety of flora and fauna, including beautiful orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns. We take a walk to observe the cock-of-the-rock (Rupícola peruviana) in its mating ritual, with the possibility of also seeing trogons (Trogon sp.), quetzals, monkeys and the emblematic spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), unique in South America. In the afternoon, we arrive at our lodge in Pilcopata, located 550 meters above sea level. It is a typical accommodation in the area, equipped with hot water in the showers and private bathrooms for the comfort of our guests.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our 45-minute bus ride to the port of Atalaya. Along the way, we can admire coca plantations, fruit trees, and beautiful orchids. Then, we board a motorized boat that will take us along the majestic Alto Madre de Dios River. During the boat ride, we will have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of birds, such as herons and kingfishers, and we are very likely to see the imposing vultures, among which the spectacular jungle condor (Sarcoramphus papa) and the majestic jaguar (Panthera onca) stand out. We also make a stop at the natural hot springs, where we can enjoy medicinal baths to relax and recharge our batteries. If we still have time available, we will visit the native community of Diamante to learn about their typical house constructions and admire the wild fruits they have. In the afternoon, we arrive at the village of Boca Manu, located 280 meters above sea level, where we will stay in a hostel with showers and bathrooms for our comfort.
After enjoying breakfast, we enter the reserve area, where we will have a greater opportunity to observe the incredible biodiversity that Manu offers. We make a brief stop at the ranger control at the Limonal lookout post. During the boat ride, we begin to understand why Manu is so famous for its wildlife. Along the river banks, we can spot groups of turtles, white caimans (Caiman cocodrylus) and even perhaps some capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), among other fascinating animals. the afternoon, we arrive at our lodge, located 250 meters above sea level. After settling in, we organize to go on a hike and visit the lake, as well as the 30-meter-high observation tower, from where we have the opportunity to spot giant otters. In Manu, animals have never suffered persecution by humans. We spent the night in our hostel, on platforms with double beds protected by mosquito nets, and we have showers and bathrooms for greater comfort.
Today the group visits Cocha Salvador, which is located 30 minutes from Cocha Otorongo. During the day, we explore walking within the virgin primary forest. We visit the lake to paddle silently on a catamaran, which gives us the opportunity to observe the river wolves again and a wide variety of exotic birds, such as the sultana cockerel (Porphyrula martinica) or the agami heron (Agamia). It is also very likely that we will see monkeys of different species; In fact, it is almost certain that we will observe at least 12 species present in the area. Later, we hike along the main trails with the guide to learn about the functioning and secrets of the tropical forest. In the afternoon, we return to our camp in Cocha Otorongo, where we spend the night on roofed platforms. Beds are provided with mosquito nets, and shared showers and bathrooms are available. Additionally, an optional night walk is offered for those who wish to participate.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our journey along the imposing Madre de Dios River and the majestic Manu until we reach the lodge, which is located very close to the impressive Macaw Clay Lick. Once there, we embark on a hike to explore the various trails around the lodge, where we will spend the night. This lodge has bathrooms for the convenience of guests. It is the perfect place to further immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the Amazon rainforest as we prepare to witness the unique spectacle of the macaws at the clay lick. It will be an unforgettable experience in the midst of the exuberant nature of Manu.
After a delicious and nutritious breakfast, we will continue our itinerary by embarking on a boat to observe the spectacular Colorful Macaw Clay Lick from a platform or a typical catamaran of the area. We will enjoy an impressive spectacle of birds of great variety in their natural habitat. Then, we will take the boat to Puerto Colorado, a trip that will take approximately 3 hours by boat. From there, we will transfer by vehicle to Puerto Carlo, then we will take the vehicle that will take us to Puerto Maldonado where we will spend the night.
On our last day after enjoying breakfast we will transfer to the bus station to return to Cusco, the duration of the trip by local bus is 8 hours (the local bus is included in the program). The arrival time in Cusco depends on the bus itinerary. At this point if you wish, you can take a flight to Cusco (45 minutes) or to Lima (2 hours); the flight is not included in the program.
