This birdwatching tour can be enjoyed in several stunning locations including Huacarpay, Ollantaytambo and Abra Málaga. Our expert guides will be happy to provide you with detailed information about the wide variety of migratory birds you will find at each destination. We offer a variety of birdwatching programs, ranging from half-day to three-day in length. All birdwatching tours start from Cusco, where we will first head to Laguna Huacarpay. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe endemic species around the lagoon, such as canasteros, hummingbirds, hawks and falcons. For the more serious birdwatchers, we recommend bringing good binoculars and, of course, don't hesitate to consult with your agency! After enjoying Huacarpay Lagoon, we will head towards Ollantaytambo to continue our bird watching expedition. The next day, we will travel to Abra Málaga, where you will have the opportunity to spot different species of birds, such as the Puna tapaculo, hummingbirds and more hummingbirds. Get ready for an unforgettable experience in nature as we explore the diversity of birds in these stunning destinations!

Itinerary

We leave Cusco very early in the morning, picking up passengers at their hotels with our comfortable private bus. We head towards the beautiful Huacarpay Lagoon, where you will have the opportunity to observe up to 50 species of birds, such as the plumbeous rail, the rail, the rusty-fronted canastero, the bearded hummingbird, hawks, falcons such as white grebes, flamingos, torrent ducks, puna ibis, Great Diving Duck, Puneño Duck, Red-rumped Duck, Corn Duck, Barcino Duck, Speckled Pigeon, Common Woodpigeon, Great Hummingbird, Giant Hummingbird, Common Moorhen, Black Hen, Andean Coot, Cattle Egret, White Heron, Blue Heron, Little Egret, Bigua, Royal Tero, Serrano Tero, Little Pitotoy, Andean Gull, Ashy Hawk, Red-rumped Hawk, Junquero, Red-fronted Canastero, Wigeon, Common Mousebird, Andean Thrush. Common Black-headed, Chingolo, Yellow-bellied Varillero, Collared Pepitero, Cinereous Honeyeater, Common Goldbill and many more. Around the lagoon, it is possible to sight, making it a true paradise for ornithology lovers. In the afternoon, we continue our journey towards the Sacred Valley. Along the way, we will take the opportunity to observe birds in specific places, further enriching our birdwatching experience. We will spend the night in Ollantaytambo, in a comfortable and cozy hotel, to rest and recharge our batteries for the adventures that await us.
We continue our journey by bus very early to have the opportunity to observe the endemic birds of the area such as the Marcapata Spinetail, Cusco Brush Finch, Parodi’s Hemispingus, Puna Thistletail, Andean Tinamou, Andean Ibis, Speckled Teal, Crested Duck, Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Variable Hawk, Mountain Caracara, American Kestrel, Andean Lapwing, Rock Dove, Band-tailed Pigeon, Eared Dove, White-tipped Dove, Sparkling Violet-ear, Shining Sunbeam, White-tufted Sunbeam, Violet-throated Starfrontlet. among other species. We will also have the opportunity to spot migratory birds that go from one place to another, further enriching our bird watching experience. We will spend the night in Ollantaytambo, where we can rest and reflect on the wonderful birds that we have been lucky enough to observe during the day. It will be an unforgettable experience for all nature and ornithology lovers.
This day we will start the activity very early to have the opportunity to observe other fascinating bird species, such as the Royal Cinclodes, the Puna Tapaculo, the Andean Hillstar, the Giant Conebill, and the Stripe-headed Antpita, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing, Giant Hummingbird, Amethyst-throated Sunange, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Purple-backed Thornbill, Tyrian Metaltail, Andean Flicker, Bar-winged Cinclodes, Royal Cinclodes, White-browed Tit-Spinetail, Tawny Tit-Spinetail, among others. These species are characteristic of the region and offer a unique and exciting birdwatching experience. After enjoying the observation of several species of birds in their natural habitat, we will return to Cusco, taking with us the memories of the beautiful birds we have been lucky enough to witness during our adventure in nature. It will be a day full of discoveries and wonders for all bird enthusiasts.

What will we do?

The first day of the itinerary begins with an early departure from Cusco to Laguna Huacarpay, where participants will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of birds, including endemic and migratory species. With around 50 species of birds inhabiting the area, Laguna Huacarpay becomes a true paradise for birdwatchers. After this enriching experience, the trip continues towards the Sacred Valley, with additional stops for birdwatching at specific locations. On the second day, the trip continues with an early exploration by bus to observe endemic and migratory birds on the route to Abra Málaga. This day will offer the opportunity to spot fascinating species, such as the Marcapata Spinetail, the Cusco Brush Finch, and the Andean Condor, among others. The night will be spent in Ollantaytambo, providing time to rest and reflect on the wonderful birds observed during the day. Finally, the third day starts early with the observation of more bird species characteristic of the region, such as the Royal Cinclodes and the Puna Tapaculo. After enjoying this unique experience in nature, the group will return to Cusco, taking with them unforgettable memories of the beautiful birds sighted during the adventure.
