Itinerary

To begin our excursion to the Manu Reserved Zone, we will leave Cusco early in the morning, between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. Our comfortable bus will pick you up at your hotel. During the trip, we will stop at the Funerary Towers, known as Chullpas de Ninamarca, located 3,750 meters above sea level. In addition, we will make a brief visit to Paucartambo, a picturesque town famous for its folklore and a colonial bridge. After ascending to the upper area of Paucartambo, we will arrive at Acjanaco, the highest point of our tour, located 4,000 meters above sea level. From there, we will begin our descent through the mysterious cloud forest, characterized by its rich diversity of flora and fauna, including beautiful orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns. We will take a hike to witness the mating ritual of the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupícola peruviana), a unique experience. In addition, we will have the opportunity to spot Trogons (Trogón sp.), quetzals, monkeys, and the emblematic spectacled bear (Tremarctos Ornatus), the only South American bear. the afternoon, we will arrive at our lodge in Pilcopata, located 550 meters above sea level. This typical local accommodation offers amenities such as showers and a private bathroom, where we will enjoy a comforting dinner and rest comfortably to continue our journey the next day.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we continue our 45-minute bus ride until we reach the port of Atalaya. During this journey, we will delight in the view of the coca plantations, fruit trees, and beautiful orchids that adorn the landscape. Once at the port, we will embark on a motorized boat that will take us along the imposing upper Madre de Dios River. During the journey, we will have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of birds, including herons, kingfishers, and especially the majestic jungle condors, known as the king of vultures (Sarcoramphus papa), as well as the elusive jaguar (Panthera onca). In addition, we will make a stop at the refreshing natural hot springs, where we can enjoy medicinal baths. If time permits, we will also visit the native community of Diamante to appreciate its traditional buildings and taste the local wild fruits. the afternoon, we will arrive at the picturesque village of Boca Manu, located 280 meters above sea level, where we will stay in a comfortable lodge equipped with showers and bathrooms to ensure a pleasant stay.
After enjoying a nutritious breakfast, we will enter the fascinating Manu Zone reserve, where we will have the privileged opportunity to immerse ourselves in the extraordinary biodiversity that this place offers. We will make a brief stop at the Limonal lookout post, controlled by the park rangers, to formally begin our adventure. We will continue our journey by boat, and little by little we will begin to understand why the Manu is so renowned for its wildlife. Along the banks of the river, we will delight in the sight of groups of turtles, white caimans (Caiman cocodrylus), and perhaps even some capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), among other animals As evening falls, we will arrive at our lodge Casa Matchiguenka, located 250 meters above sea level. Here, we will settle into double beds on platforms, and soon after we will prepare for an exciting hike to explore the lake and the 30-meter-high observation tower, from where we will have the unique opportunity to spot giant otters. It is important to note that in Manu, animals have never been persecuted by humans. We will spend the night at the lodge, where we are provided with double beds equipped with mosquito nets, and we have shared shower and bathroom facilities for added convenience.
Today the group heads into Cocha Salvador, just 30 minutes away from the lodge. During this day, we will explore the lush virgin primary forest on foot. At the cocha, we will travel on a catamaran in complete silence, giving us the opportunity to once again spot the river otters and a wide variety of unique birds, such as the sultana cock (Porphyrula Martinica) or the Agami heron (Agamia). It is very likely that we will also see monkeys of various species, with an average observation of 12 of the 15 species present in the area. Later, we will undertake a guided walk along the main trails of the forest, where our guide will reveal to us the secrets and functioning of this tropical ecosystem. At dusk, we will return to the lodge, where we will spend the night on covered platforms. Beds are fitted with mosquito nets to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, and shared shower and toilet facilities are available for added convenience. Additionally, an optional night walk is available for those who wish to further explore the forest’s nocturnal life.
Early in the morning, the group will head towards the macaw clay lick located in the Salvadorcillo Creek. Afterwards, we will continue our journey by boat towards Pakitza, the last lookout post in the Manu National Park, where we will explore the mammal clay lick. During this journey, we will have the opportunity to observe various species of plants, birds and, hopefully, some animals in their natural habitat. We will spend the night in our camp on platforms, equipped with beds provided with mosquito nets and protective roofs. In addition, we will have shared showers and bathrooms for greater comfort. Those who wish to further explore the nocturnal life of the forest will have the option to participate in an optional night walk.
Today we wake up to the exciting howling of the giant otters (Alouatta seniculus)! Unfortunately, it is time to start our return to Boca Manu, but we will still have the opportunity to spot many other bird species and who knows what else nature has in store for us. During our return trip, we will have the option to visit a 30-meter observation tower at Cocha Otorongo to observe the giant otters and caimans once again. We will also visit, either on the way there or on the way back, the impressive Cocha Brasco, where we will be able to admire the majestic giant otters. As an additional option, we offer an exciting night walk around the lodge for those who wish to explore the jungle’s nocturnal life even more. We will spend the night in the cozy lodge, where you will find shared shower and toilet facilities.
We continue our return journey by boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River, offering another opportunity to spot various birds and, hopefully, wild animals along the way. As evening approaches, we approach our cozy lodge in Paititi, where we will spend the night. You will enjoy the convenience of private showers and bathrooms available for your comfort.
This day is tinged with nostalgia as we bid farewell to our wonderful jungle, full of mysteries and charms. We will begin our return by boat to Atalaya, and from there we will travel by bus back to Cusco. During the trip, we will have the opportunity to delight once again with the imposing Cloud Forest, which houses an immense variety of flora and fauna.
